The 2024 PSA Syllabus Award goes to Agnieszka Jeżyk, Maria Kott Endowed Assistant Professor of Polish Studies, from the University of Washington for her class syllabus “The Other in Other Europe: Poland’s Racial and Ethnic Other.”
The next call will be in 2026. From the 2024 call:
The Polish Studies Association (PSA) is announcing the 2024 syllabus award, where we wish to showcase effective and creative teaching of Polish Studies.
Polish Studies as a field has undergone a thorough rethinking over the past generation. It has become more than a niche field focusing on a single European country. Increasingly, the study of Poland and Polish culture has become embedded in larger global transformations. We invite submissions of course syllabi that reflect the changing nature of teaching and Polish Studies. Our goal is to build a collection of new ideas and good practices from around the world that will help those who are trying to internationalize Polish Studies and introduce it to new audiences.
Any member of the PSA may make a submission; non-members wishing to submit an entry are encouraged to become members, though all syllabi will be considered. Entries may be syllabi of courses specifying a schedule of sessions and reading lists, or descriptions of learning activities that do not fit the traditional notion of “course.” While foreign language entries are accepted, if you submit in a language other than English or Polish, please provide a translation. Submissions will be reviewed by the PSA, and the award will be announced at the upcoming ASEEES convention in Boston. If you have anonymous course evaluations, a selection can be included, as well.
We are particularly interested in syllabi which reveal:
• how traditional teaching methods and material can be adopted in a digital age (keyword: digital learning);
• how Poland and Polish culture fit into larger, global transformations (keyword: comparative studies);
• how Polish studies encompasses multiple fields (keyword: interdisciplinarity);
• productive combinations of mainstream English-language sources with non-English sources.
All entries will be considered for the annual prize, and the prize-winner(s) will be invited to discuss the content of the winning entry. The winner will also receive a 500 USD prize. Where deemed appropriate, syllabi that do not win may also be featured on the PSA website as part of a planned syllabus repository. Even if you are not interested in winning the prize, all syllabi are welcome to be considered for the repository as a resource for scholars on everything Polish.
Entries may be submitted at any time by e-mail to Dr. Mark Keck-Szajbel, keck@europa-uni.de. The deadline for submission of syllabi to be considered for the 2024 prize is 1 October 2024. The award will be announced at the upcoming ASEEES annual convention in November.
